Optimizing Bikeshare Service to Connect Affordable Housing Units with Transit Service

Research Product Type
Research Report
This research studies the potential of bikeshare services to bridge the gap between Affordable Housing Communities (AHC) and transit services to improve transport accessibility of the residents. In doing so, the study develops an agent-based simulation optimization modeling (ABM) framework for the optimal design of the bikesharing station network considering improving accessibility as the objective.

Optimizing Bikeshare Service to Connect Affordable Housing Units with Transit Services

  • Principal Investigator Miguel Jaller, Ph.D.
  • University of California, Davis
This project will develop a framework to optimize the location of bikeshare stations to mitigate the barriers between affordable housing and transit services. To achieve this, the multi-objective optimization process will consider both bikeshare trip demand, transit service schedule, available affordable housing units, and other geographic information.

The Role of Level of Service in Post-SB 743 California

  • Principal Investigator Elisa Barbour, Ph.D.
  • University of California, Davis
This project will investigate how and whether localities are able to effectively integrate use of both level-of-service (LOS) and vehicle miles traveled (VMT), identify the best practices, and provide recommendations for Caltrans and other state agencies for assisting localities.

Transit Oriented Development Opportunities Among Failing Malls

Research Product Type
Policy Brief
This policy brief summarizes findings from a white paper that provided the rationale for turning failing shopping malls with large footprints into mixed-use housing, then providing or enhancing transit to these redevelopment projects, which could result in successful TODs.

Transit-Oriented Development Opportunities Among Failing Malls

  • Principal Investigator Hilda Blanco, Ph.D.
  • University of Southern California
This paper explores opportunities for the redevelopment of failing regional shopping malls as Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs) to improve transit ridership, focusing on Southern California.

Transit-Oriented Development Ridership Calculator - Phase 1

  • Principal Investigator Susan Pike, Ph.D.
  • University of California, Davis
This project will lay the groundwork for creating a calculator for estimating the ridership impacts of Transit-Oriented Development through reviewing the existing literature on the topic and identifying an actionable plan and concrete model structure to implement the calculator.
