Cost of Plug-in Electric Vehicle Ownership: How the cost of ownership impacts the choice between conventional and plug-in electric vehicles

  • Principal Investigator Debapriya Chakraborty, Ph.D.
  • University of California, Davis
This project will study the factors influencing the total cost of ownership and operation of Plug-In Electric Vehicles and how policies like CAFE and fuel/electricity price trends impact the comparative costs of internal combustion engines and plug-in electric vehicles.

Cost of Plug-in Electric Vehicle Ownership: The Cost of Transitioning to Five Million Plug-In Vehicles in California

Research Product Type
Research Report
This report presents a detailed analysis of vehicle manufacturing costs and market-level TCO accounting for technology uncertainties, behavioral heterogeneity, and key decision parameters of automakers. Using the estimates of the vehicle manufacturing costs, the cost of electrification of California’s LDV fleet is estimated to achieve the state’s net-zero emission goal by 2045.

Cost Sensitivity and Charging Choices of Plug-in Electric Vehicle Drivers – A Stated Preference Study

  • Principal Investigator Gil Tal, Ph.D.
  • University of California, Davis
Using stated preference choice experiments, this study tries to fill the two gaps in the literature mentioned here: identify the drivers of choice of charging location during non-routine charging events and quantitative estimates of consumer preference for pricing strategies and other charging infrastructure attributes in case of routine nonhome charging events.

Costs, Reliability, Vehicle Characteristics, and Incentives are the Top Factors Influencing Freight Vehicle Technology Choices

Research Product Type
Policy Brief
California has set goals for transitioning the freight sector to near-zero-emission and zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). California offers several incentive programs to encourage adoption of ZEVs, but purchase decisions are driven by complex factors beyond simple purchase price. Researchers at UC Davis deployed a stated-preference survey of fleet and carrier companies to collect information about vehicle purchase preferences and how they might be influenced by various incentive programs.

Data Dashboard and Capacity Building for Electric Carsharing in Underserved BIPOC Communities

  • Principal Investigator Caroline Rodier, Ph.D.
  • University of California, Davis
This project addresses the need to increase access to grant funds to develop electric vehicle (EV) carsharing in underserved communities, particularly in rural and suburban areas. The research team designed this translational research project to engage communities interested in developing electric carsharing programs.

Data-Driven Behavior Analysis and Implications in Plug-in Electric Vehicle Policy Studies

Research Product Type
Dissertation / Thesis
The adoption of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) is considered to be a potential solution to reduce transportation-related emissions. People’s vehicle choice and driving behavior will have important implications for the realized emissions reductions from PEVs. Therefore, PEV-related policy studies require good understanding of human behavior. This dissertation proposes data-driven approaches to simulate behavior and provides a discussion of the implications for three PEV-related topics.
