Event Overview

Walking infrastructure is important for livable and sustainable cities, especially for vulnerable populations. However, extreme temperatures can increase travel time and potentially cause health concerns. Due to their sensitivity to extreme temperatures, more frequent use of the transit network, and other factors, wheelchair users are particularly vulnerable to extreme temperatures. In this research webinar, Dr. Fizzy Fan will present findings from her innovative modeling techniques and the application of high-performance computing to assess the impacts of extreme weather on vulnerable communities. Her research investigates the relationship between physical vulnerability, weather conditions, and travel behavior, offering valuable insights to help planners address the adverse effects of extreme weather and improve accessibility for all.

Dr. Fizzy Fan

Dr. Huiying (“Fizzy”) Fan is a Research Engineer II at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she also earned her Ph.D. She is an Educational Fellow with the National Science Foundation funded AI institute for Intelligent Cyberinfrastructure with Computational Learning in the Environment. Dr. Fan works at the intersection of transportation systems engineering, climate modeling, and network sciences. Her research delves into the complexities of spatiotemporal transportation resilience under climate change. It highlights network-level features of systems resilience, such as trip-level risk accumulation, cascading failures, and potential tipping points that lead to system-wide collapse. Beyond theoretical contributions, Dr. Fan also emphasizes the practical application of her research by developing simulation software tools like SidewalkSim and TransitSim.
