Applying Vulnerability Assessments and Triple Bottom Line Considerations to Rail Infrastructure Management: Toward an Integrated Framework for Rail Resilience and Sustainability

  • Principal Investigator Adair Garrett
  • Georgia Institute of Technology
This research will apply climate vulnerability assessments and the TBL approach to sustainability to rail infrastructure planning and resource allocation decision making. The results will be validated by rail operators and administrators to support improved investments in rail that are resilient to extreme events, protect the natural environment, enhance economic competitiveness, and improve societal quality of life, equitably.

Assessing the Charging Needs of Multi-EV Households in California

  • Principal Investigator Gil Tal, Ph.D.
  • University of California, Davis
This project will determine the market penetration and charging infrastructure needs of multi-EV households by region and community in California from 2022 to 2040, with a particular focus on how access to charging will affect the rate at which households acquire additional EVs and on the difficulties of expanding EV ownership in Disadvantaged Communities in California.

Benchmarking GHG Emissions from California Concrete Production and Readily Implementable Mitigation Methods

Research Product Type
Research Report
The manufacturing of Portland cement leads to notable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which has driven interest in alternative concrete mixture designs, cement production processes, and other emissions mitigation strategies. To demonstrate the efficacy of such mitigation strategies, environmental impact assessments are commonly performed. However, examination of the probability that a reduction in GHG emissions will occur given known limitations on data quality and variability in data remains poorly studied.

Benchmarking Greenhouse Gas Emissions from California Concrete Production and Readily Implementable Mitigation Methods

  • Principal Investigator Sabbie Miller, Ph.D.
  • University of California, Davis
Through development of necessary benchmarks as well as robust tools for assessment and improvement, this work will better inform the procurement of concrete for transportation infrastructure. Further, the tools developed will quantify potential co-benefits or unintended consequences to other environmental impacts.
