This policy brief summarizes findings from UC Davis research that used life cycle assessment, a modeling tool for evaluating a product or activity’s environmental impacts through all stages of its life, to quantify the environmental performance of complete streets.

This project calculated two sets of activity estimates based on two different travel surveys conducted in California: the 2009 National Household Travel Survey and the 2010-2012 California Household Travel Survey.

Using San Francisco and Los Angeles as case studies, the research team quantified bikeshare service levels for communities of concern (CoCs) by analyzing the spatial distribution of service areas, available bikes and bike idle times, trip data, and rebalancing among the dock-based and dockless systems.

The dataset provided here is an anonymous version of the survey results of city planning directors in these regions, conducted between April and July, 2019.

Many gaps exist to include Complete Streets in asset management, and there is no comprehensive plan for filling those gaps. This project developed a road map to fill those gaps.

This research undertook an evaluation of the sidewalk inventory on a relatively large geographic scale, which lays a solid foundation for a variety of active-mobility-focused applications and related research.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis analyzed the difference in service levels among dock-based and dockless systems in the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles and analyzed the spatial distribution of service areas, availability of bikes and bike idle times, trip statistics, rebalancing, and other metrics to understand how well or poorly these systems serve designated “communities of concern”.
