Event Overview
Without a change in trends, U.S. truck energy use and CO2 emissions are likely to grow substantially into the future. Although it is not mandated that trucks reduce CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 (“80-in-50”), this is a reasonable target in a carbon constrained world. This presentation provided an overview of findings from a white paper from the National Center for Sustainable Transportation that examines the feasibility of achieving an 80-in-50 target from freight transport systems, with a focus on U.S. trucking. Several scenarios for achieving this target for trucks will be presented along with a discussion of technical, economic, and other challenges in achieving deep penetrations of low carbon vehicles and fuels, including zero-emission vehicles (ZEV – i.e. battery electric or hydrogen/fuel cell) and vehicles running on biofuels. Policy implications and areas where additional research is needed will also be discussed.
