Managing Roadway Systems to Reduce GHG Emissions and Improve Energy Efficiency: A Focus on Traffic Operations

There have been a variety of traffic operation improvement techniques that have been developed over the last decade that improve safety, reduce congestion, and as a whole, make surface transportation more efficient. In addition, these techniques will also have a significant energy and emissions (greenhouse gas and pollutant) reduction. In this project, we survey a variety of traffic operation strategies that have both an indirect energy-emissions benefit as well as those strategies that are developed specifically for reducing energy consumption and emissions. Based on the techniques developed to date, the potential benefits will be estimated along with the expected deployment time frames.
