Dr. Fengxiang Qiao is the Director of the Innovative Transportation Research Institute (ITRI), a Department of Transportation Studies professor, and an adjunct professor in the Department of Environmental and Interdisciplinary Sciences at Texas Southern University (TSU). Dr. Qiao is the co-founder and the leader of the TSU Driving Simulator lab and the Transportation Emission Lab and has conducted much prestigious research on driving behavior and transportation environmental studies.
Dr. Fengxiang Qiao has extensive research expertise and industrial experience in sustainable transportation studies, transportation simulation, traffic operation, safety, driving behavior studies, simulator tests, vehicle emission testing and modeling, air quality analysis, transportation impacts on the environment and public health, transportation design, congestion mitigation, intelligent modeling of ITS data, vehicle to vehicle communication, connected vehicle message testing, etc. He has secured 24 research grants or projects as the PI/Co-PI from the U.S. Department of Transportation University Transportation Centers, the National Science of Academies Transportation Research Board, the Federal Highway Administration / Texas Department of Transportation, etc. His research has resulted in about 300 peer-reviewed and referred journal and conference proceedings papers, reports, and books. He is the editor-in-chief of the ASCE proceedings "Resilience and Sustainable Transportation Systems" for the 13th Asian Pacific Transportation Development Conference, June 2020. He is an editorial board member of eight international journals on transportation and environmental studies.
Dr. Qiao organizes the 12th and 13th Asian Pacific Transportation Development Conferences in 2018 and 2020. He served as the co-PI on the TSU side of the National Tier One University Transportation Center TranLIVE (2011-2016). He created a Summer Transportation Academy program for high-school students and a Transportation Environment Club in a primary school in Houston. Dr. Qiao received the TSU Distinguished Faculty Research/Scholarly Activity Award in 2012 and the Distinguished Researcher of the Year Award from the TSU College of Science, Engineering, and Technology in 2012, 2018, and 2024.
Dr. Qiao received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering focusing on Transportation Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2000. He is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS), the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Transportation Research Board (TRB), and many other professional organizations. He also serves on numerous committees and other regional, national, and international councils and organizations.
