Event Overview

The field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) has witnessed a significant increase in activity with the advent of modern control, communications, and information technologies to vehicles and roadway infrastructure. While the primary objectives of ITS have primarily focused on improving safety, mobility, and efficiency of the transportation system, it is now well known that ITS technology can also deliver significant environmental benefits. Recently emerged environmental-ITS programs specifically designed to minimize the environmental impacts of transportation have shown to reduce energy and emissions on the order of 5% to 15%.

This webinar will feature a presentation from Matthew Barth (Professor and Director of the Center for Environmental Research and Technology, UC Riverside) who will discuss advances being made in environmental-ITS applications in three main areas: vehicle systems, traffic management systems, and travel information systems. Following his short presentation will be a facilitated discussion regarding the implications of environmental-ITS applications on policy, planning, and practice as well as future directions for this rapidly developing field with opening comments provided by Marco Anderson, Senior Regional Planner, Southern California Association of Governments and Samer Rajab, PhD, ITS Research Engineer, Honda R&D Americas, Inc.
